What is your legacy? What would you want to leave behind for your loved ones? Would it be something good, that which they can be proud of and to continue? Or, is your legacy going to cause trouble? What, indeed, is a legacy?
Cambridge Dictionary defines ‘Legacy’ as:
1 “money or property that you receive from someone after they die.”
2 “Something that is a part of your history or that remains from an earlier time.”
3 “Something that is a result of events in the past.”
It is an inheritance. So consider, would you want to leave behind a good inheritance?
Here’s one which works for many people :
Proverbs 22:1 KJV
“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.”
This is not about just a good name or reputation, but more so what constitute the ‘good’ name. It is an inheritance rich in spiritual and moral beliefs, a Faith and a Hope. This good name and loving favor is The Way of Salvation.
Thus for myself, the one legacy I would want to leave behind is The Way for my loved ones to be saved. I would want to leave them the Key to Eternal Life, so that we would be together again.
A legacy is also a blessing.
Most people look forward to the reading of a Will in the hope that they would be given a substantial inheritance of material wealth. Many also look forward to a Title, a Status, a position of fame, power and prestige.
Rather bizarrely perhaps, there are some who hope for a legend, a mystical calling or tasks to be carried on with pride and honor. They imagined a past filled with honorable tasks and battles which they hope to carry on after a predecessor has passed on. I watched the television show Arrow recently in which the most recent episodes showcased the newer generation carrying on a past legacy. In fact, the latest episode is aptly named “Inheritance”, which is one way to understand ‘legacy’.
Then there are those who just want a chance at honor, to be given a continued legacy of respect.
A good legacy is a desirable and commendable inheritance to give. It stands to reason then that before we can leave it to others, we must first build it. Make it a good and lasting one. Let it be that your legacy would give hope to your loved ones, to save them and lead them to you at the end of their journey. May your legacy be useful, may it show loved ones The Way.
