Upgrade and Self-Improvement
A Necessary Upgrade
1 Peter 2:2 KJV
“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”
In context, the Holy Scripture verses go thus:
1 Peter 2:1-5 KJV
“Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.”
A friend came visiting earlier, and he shared a good truth with us.
He said, “A respected friend and brother-in-Christ told me earlier this year that we need to upgrade ourselves. He said that this is good, that every year we see ourselves progressing and maturing in all aspects of our life. Even though sometimes our progress might be slow, nevertheless, it is commendable that we mature and are better especially in our character growth.”
I find that this is good and true.
At the very beginning of this year, I was thinking that I needed to upgrade, among other things, my phone, my computer and my wardrobe, not necessarily in that order. In fact, just last month, in keeping with this resolution, I over-hauled my wardrobe. I threw away some raggedy shirts, gave away some old but wearable ones, and bought some new cloths.
I figured that I needed to upgrade some things in my life.
Even so, what this friend said reminded me that there is one most particular and very important upgrade which needed to be done, mainly to myself. To be specific, the very essence of me: my character, soul, spirit and not least physical being.
Some would put the physical part first, being that it is most tangible and therefor most easy to keep up with. Lord knows I feel like I need a complete overhaul in my body sometimes. Comes with advancing age, I suppose, although some would say that age doesn’t matter. It does.
Anyway, upgrading oneself is not easy but it is very necessary, I believe. Being a Christian, I started by meditating on my own character. I found myself wanting.
The Tool For Upgrade
How do you meditate on yourself? Answer, you use God’s Word.
Take this verse for example, “…laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings…” While it is true that I don’t curse or use my words to deliberately hurt others, I found that I did and have been rather loose in my words. Sometimes, I speak carelessly and thoughtlessly, not taking into account that someone might take them as serious words and act on them. I think, any words which dishearten or cause others to trip are ‘evil sayings’. Christians are called to build up others and show them hope, after all.
So yes, I needed to upgrade myself.
Do you find sometimes that you are not satisfied with who you are as a person? Maybe, in terms of not showing a mature and responsible side of yourself, especially considering that someone might be looking up to you? Then I guess, it is time to think of an upgrade.
Far be it for me to tell people to ‘better’ themselves. However, I do think that an upgrade of a person is always needed. I mean, my phone didn’t even need that upgrade, I just wanted it since it’s a new year, new opportunities, and maybe it might be time to move forward in technology after all.
So, why not do the same with your life and everything pertaining to it?
On that note, consider this Truth, “…desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”
The Truth is simple but profound: we can’t grow without the nutritious Word of God, It is health to our body, salvation to our soul and growth to our spirit. A guaranteed way to see perfect result in self-upgrade is to read the Word, meditate on it, and obey it.
May this new year see our perfect and amazing upgrade in you and yours, amen!
