Shakespeare’s Jewels

“Tis very pregnant, the jewel that we find, we stoop and take’t because we see it; but what we do not see we tread upon, and never think of it. (Measure For Measure)”

A work by William Shakespeare, this quote was was said by the character Angelo to Escalus in the play ‘Measure for Measure’.

The meaning is simple. If you don’t see it, if you don’t know it, than you can’t be tempted by it. ‘Pregnant’ here means ‘obvious’, that which can be perceived. Like, I didn’t know there was a sale goin’ on, so I wasn’t tempted to go spend my money away!

But I do know that there is currently a Book Fair going on in my city with up to 90 percent discount and I have already spent money on three books. I am planning to go again and buy more books. Books are my jewels, and when I see sales happening, I’m a-going!

What are your jewels which you cannot resist? Do you think it is better to not know about it so you are not tempted by it?
